BTEC Construction

This course is for those who are intending to work in the construction industry or who have an interest in it. Throughout the two years you will cover 8 units selected to give a broad introduction to this area of study and work. There are 2 written exams and all other work must be provided as evidence in a folder/portfolio. This will be in the form of written pieces, research and evaluations, written task sheets, observation records and other evidence documents. All practical work needs to be photographed and the pictures placed in the folder linked to the appropriate assignment.

Units of study

There are 4 compulsory units: ‘Construction Technology, ‘Construction and Design’, ‘Scientific and Mathematical Applications for Construction’ and ‘Sustainability in the Construction Industry’. These introduce learners to the theoretical understanding behind all the practical tasks and to how this area of work is made up and the importance of the subject. It also covers the topical area of sustainable construction which is key in today’s environment. These units will be achieved by completing a mixture or hand written and computer generated assignments.  Two of these units will be assessed by written exam paper: ‘Construction Technology’ (1hr) and ’Sustainability’ (1hr 15mins)

Exploring Carpentry and Joinery Principles and Techniques

  • Understand tools, materials and equipment used in carpentry and joinery.
  • Develop practical skills using safe techniques to produce a timber frame.

Exploring Brickwork and Blockwork Principles and Techniques

  • Understand tools, materials and equipment used for brickwork and blockwork.
  • Develop practical skills using safe techniques to construction brickwork and blockwork.

Exploring Electrical Principles and Techniques

  • Understand tools, materials and equipment used for electrical operations.
  • Develop practical skills using safe techniques to undertake electrical operations.

Exploring Wall and Floor Tiling Principles and Techniques

  • Understand tools, materials and equipment used for wall and floor tiling tasks.
  • Develop practical skills using safe techniques to carry out wall and floor tiling tasks.
