GCSE Product Design

Students follow the AQA GCSE Product Design course as follows:

60% = Controlled Assessment project

40% = Written exam paper (2hrs) at end of course

Autumn Term Year 10

Students will undertake an extended project that will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to the course
  • Design History
  • Design communication, drawing & presentation techniques
  • Paper/card
  • Packaging purposes & alternatives
  • Printing techniques
  • Die cutting

Spring Term Year 10

Students will have the opportunity to choose another material area to study from the following and will undertake a project in this medium:

  • Wood
  • Plastic
  • Textiles

The following topics will be covered in these projects:

 

  • Consumer issues
  • Marketing
  • Safety
  • Materials, types, properties, uses, manufacturing techniques.
  • New & Smart materials
  • Human factors
  • Sustainability 6Rs, Green issues

Summer Term Year 10

Students will cover the following topics in the first half term and will begin their Controlled Assessment over the half term holiday.

  • Manufacturing Introduction
  • Standard components
  • Product maintenance
  • Quality issues
  • ICT in Manufacturing
  • Research Plan
  • Research
  • Yr10 Exams and feedback
  • Target market plan
  • Design criteria plan
  • Ideas strategies

In Year 11, students focus on their Controlled Assessment project:

They should be coming up with initial design ideas over the Summer holidays as well as finishing any research the need to do.

The deadlines are as follows:

Research and analysis - start of September

Design ideas and development – October half term

Making, testing and evaluation – February half term

After this, students focus on exam knowledge, prep and revision ready for the written paper.
