Holidays

Unit 1 – Revision of holiday vocabulary: destination, travel, accommodation.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to understand at least five words/expressions per category.
Most students will be able to say and write these accurately from memory.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to use these words in present tense sentences.

Key vocabulary: nach Spanien/Italien/Frankreich=to Spain/Italy/France; ans Meer =to the seaside/in die Berge=to the mountains; mit dem Auto/Flugzeug/Schiff =by car/plane/ship;in einer Jugendherberge=in a youth hostel;auf einem Campingplatz-on a campsite; bei Verwandten=with relatives

Unit 2 – Saying where you normally go on holiday using time expressions; word order time manner place.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to complete a short gap-fill text about holidays.
Most students will be able to use a variety of time expressions and understand and apply “verb as second idea “(inversion)grammar rule.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to adapt a model text and understand and use subordinating conjunctions weil and wo and the correct word order (TMP).

Key vocabulary: normalerweise=normally; manchmal=sometimes; in den Sommerferien=in the summer holidays; in den Weihnachtsferien=in the Christmas holidays; ich fahre=I go; ich übernachte=I stay

Unit 3 – Discussing what type of holiday activities you enjoy; using gern, lieber, am liebsten.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say what they like, prefer, like doing most of all on holiday.
Most students will be able to use a qualifier: sehr gern, nicht gern, besonders gern, überhaupt nicht gern.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to say what others like/prefer doing using a variety of personal pronouns with correct verb endings.

Key vocabulary: ich bleibe gern zu Hause=I like staying at home; ich liege lieber am Strand=I prefer lying on the beach; am liebsten fahre ich Ski=most of all I like going skiing

Unit 4 – Justifying holiday choices using weil and “man kann…”

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to link simple sentences with weil (weil es interessant ist).
Most students will be able to use the weil clause with a range of verbs (weil es viel zu tun gibt/weil ich mich für……..interessiere).

ome learners will have progressed further and will be able to say what you can do using man kann + infinitive at end of sentence and combine weil + man kann using correct word order(weil man im Freien übernachten kann/weil man auch Tagesausflüge machen kann).

Key vocabulary: weil es interessant/entspannend/heiβ und sonnig/langweilig/ermüdend ist=because it’s interesting/relaxing/ hot and sunny/boring/tiring; weil es Spaβ macht=because it’s fun; weil ich mich für die Sehenswürdigkeiten interessiere=because I’m interested in the sights

Unit 5 – Talking about what you can do in all weathers/using correct word order after the subordinating conjunction wenn.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to link a suitable weather phrase with an activity from a table of set phrases.
Most students will be able to generate their own sentences by changing underlined words.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to create their own sentences using wenn and reflexive and/or modal verbs.

Key vocabulary: wenn=when/whenever/if; wenn es regnet, gehe ich ins Kino=when it rains I go to the cinema; wenn es heiβ ist, entspanne ich mich am Strand=when it’s hot I relax on the beach

Unit 6 – Talking about holioday activities in the past tense.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to give basic sentences where they went/how they travelled/where they stayed/ what the weather was like.
Most students will be able to write the above in a short paragraph using connectives and correct word order.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to include opinions.

Key vocabulary: Ich bin/wir sind…..nach Frankreich/ ans Meer ….gefahren/geflogen. = I/we went/flew to France/ to the seaside; Ich war/ wir waren in….= I was/we were… Ich habe/wir haben… übernachtet/gewojnt = We stayed (overnight) Das Wetter war…. The weather was…. Es hat geregnet/geschneit… It rained/snowed

Unit 7 – Saying what you did on holiday.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say at least five sentences about what they did on holiday.
Most students will be able to give an opinion and write the above in a short paragraph using connectives and correct word order.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to say what someone else did using a variety of personal pronouns and correct verb endings.

Key vocabulary: Ich habe/wir haben…. gegessen/gemacht/gespielt/getroffen/kennen gelernt…… I/we ate/did/played/met/got to know…. Ich habe mich gesonnt/entspannt…. I sunbathed/relaxed; Ich bin/wir sind schwimmen/spazieren/einkaufen gegangen= I went swimming/for a walk/ shopping; ich bin/wir sind Ski/Rad gefahren=I/we went skiing/cycling.

Unit 8 – Describing a journey in the past.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to understand a longer and more complicated text and describe what the journey was like.
Most students will be able to expand on their paragraph and mention positive and negative aspects.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able include more varied vocabulary that they have researched and say what they would rather do the next time.

Key vocabulary: Letzten Monat/letztes Jahr/ in den Ferien=last month / last year/ in the holiodays; Ich bin um 9 Uhr mit dem Auto abgefahren und um … angekommen. = I left by car at 9 o’clock and arrived at…./ unterwegs haben wir den Weg verfehlt = on the way we got list; die Reise = the journey; Meiner Meinung nach = in my opinion; angenehm/schnell/langsasm/(un)bequem, stressig = pleasant/quick/slow(un)comfortable/ stressful; Wir hatten eine Panne = we had a breakdown; Auf der Autobahn war ein riesiger Stau = On the motorway there was a huge jam; meine Eltern haben gestritten und meine kleine Schwester gequengelt = my parents argued and my little sister moaned.

Unit 9 – Discussing holiday accommodation.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write a short paragraph about holiday accommodation including positive and negative aspects and to understand a more complex text.
Most students will be able to write a longer paragraph with different tenses, especially present tense.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to research more varied vocabulary to avoid repetition.

Key vocabulary: Ein Einzelzimmer/Doppelzimmer mit Bad/Dusche/Balkon/Aussicht auf…./Internetanschluss/Klimaanlage/Fernseher….. a single/double room with bathroom/shower/ view on…/internet connections/air conditioning/ T.V.; es gab (k)ein/e/n Strom/Wasser/platz/ mehrere Einkaufsmöglichkeiten/ einige Sportmöglichkeiten/ verschiedene Freizeitaktivitäten = there was/were(n’t) electricity/water/space /several shopping facilities/ some sport facilities/ various free time activities. Der Aufzug war außer Betrieb.= The lift was out of order. Die Heizung funktionierte nicht = the heating didn’t work. Das Personal war sehr unfreundlich.=The staff was very unfriendly.

Unit 10 – Discussing future holiday plans using the proper future and a range of other expressions talking about hopes and intentions.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to use the future tense 1st person singular and plural and at least 2 expressions to express intentions in the context of describing future holiday plans. They research some new vocabulary in order to avoid repetition.
Most students will be able to use the future tense also in the 3rd person singular and at least 3-4 more expressions on plans.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to use the future tense for all person and all expressions to express hopes and intentions.

Key vocabulary: Ich /wir werden…. = I/we will….. Ich möchte = I would like…… + infinitive; ich plane/beabsichtige/hoffe/habe vor + zu + infinitve = I would like to….. I plan to/intend to/hope to/ intend to…

Unit 11 – Saying what you kind of holiday you would rather have.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write some sentences in the conditional tense.
Most students will be able to include the irregular forms ‘hätte’ and wäre’.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to combine the conditional with subordinate clauses as above.

Key vocabulary: Da es immer nur geregnet hat/ das Essen eine Katastrophe war/ die Leute super-unfreundlich war = Because it always rained/ the food was a catastrophe/ the people were super-unfriendly; I would rather go to …. = Würde ich lieber nach…… gehen/fahren ; es wäre toll, schön, schlimm, schrecklich…. = it would be great, nice, bad, awful.
