Unit 1 – Description of the school and facilities

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say at least 6 sentences describing their school.
Most students will be able to use a range of adjectives with correct case endings and ‘wo’ in a relative clause with correct word order.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to include independently researched vocabulary and structures and perhaps add an imperfect tense/the passive.

Key vocabulary: Meine Schule heißt… = my school is called; Sie ist eine Gesamtschule = it is a comprehensive school; Sie ist (ziemlich/besonders) groß/klein/modern/alt = it is ( quite/particularly) big/small/modern/old).; wir haben ungefähr … Schüler und … Lehrer. = we have approx. ….pupils and … teachers. Es gibt… There is/are einen (großen) Schulhof, (gut ausgestattete )Labors, viele moderne Klassenräume mit interaktiven Tafeln, eine brand-neue Turnhalle…..= a big schoolyard, well equipped labs, many modern classrooms with interactive whiteboards, a brand new Sporthall…. Ich finde die Schule/die Lehrer + adjectives = I find the school/ the teachers ….

Unit 2 – Saying what subject you do and giving your opinion; making comparisons

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say what subjects they do and give an opinion (positive and negative) and use the ‘weil’ clause.
Most students will be able to make comparisons.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to use the subordinating conjunction ‘obwohl’.

Key vocabulary: Ich mache/lerne/habe…= I do/learn/have…. Pflichtfächer/ Wahlpflichtfächer und Wahlfächer…= core subjects/ option choices/ extracurricular subjects; Erdkunde-Mathe, = geography – maths; Ich finde = I find.. schwer/einfach/kompliziert/nützlich/wichtig = difficult/easy/complicated/useful/important; interssanter als.. more interesting than.. einfacher als… easier than… Mein Lieblingsfach ist…. = my favourite subject…. gefällt mir… like it…; …kann ich nicht leiden = can’t stand it.

Unit 3 – Talking about teachers

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to at least two teachers, one positive one negative using adjectives and qualifiers.

ost students will be able to use the superlative and justify it.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to include different tenses.

Key vocabulary: (zu/einbisschen/garnicht/s hr) fleißig/intelligent/streng/hilfsbereit/lustig/ optmistisch/langweilig/(un)geduldig/ ungerecht….. (too/a little/not at all/very) hardworking/intelligent/helpful/funny/optimistic/boring/ (im)patient/ unfair; der/die beste Lehrer/in der Schule…. the best teascher of the school….; ich kann ihn/sie nicht asustehen= I can’t stand him/her; er/sie wird schnell ärgerlich = he,she gets angry quickly; mein Mathelehrer erwartet zuviel von uns….me math teacher is too demanding… ich musste nachsitzen… I had to do a detention; ich kann seine/ihre Erklärungen nie verstehen.= I can never understand his/her explanations; er/sie kann gut erklären = he,she can explain well.

Unit 4 – Describing a typical school day

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to give a basic account of a normal school day.
Most students will be able  to include opinions.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to mention some daily routine activities before school and how they get to school.

Key vocabulary: Die Schule beginnt um = School starts at; wir haben sechs Stunden pro Tag; = we have six lessons a day. Jede Stune dauert… each lesson lasts…. Nach den ersten zwei Stunden haben wir Pause = After the first two lesssons we have break; in der Pause = In break time… treffe ich meine Freunde/ gehe ich nach draußen, mache ich meine hausaufgaben fertig, esse ich ein Butterbrot= I meet my friends/ I go outside/ I finish my homework/I eat my sandwich; zu Mittag = At lunchtime; esse ich in der Kantine/gehe ich nach Hause/ mache ich eine Theater AG…. = I eat in the canteen/ go home/ do drama club; nachmittags gibt es noch zwei weitere Stunden = in the afternoon there are two more lessons; die Schule ist um drei Uhr aus = school finishes at three o’clock.
