Unit 1 – Talking about and comparing film genres

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to categorize some titles and some genres, say a sentence about the genres of certain films and express like/dislikes.

ome learners will have progressed further and will be able to to use present and imperfect tense.

Unit 2 – Giving opinions on film genres/films and justification using ‘weil’ and ‘obwohl’ in subordination

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to describe different genres of films, using at least 3 different adjective for each in full sentences e.g. Ich finde Komöden lustig und unterhaltsam,aber manchmal kitschig.
Most students will be able to use at least 5 different adjectives and the ‘obwohl’ sentence.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to research even more interesting vocabulary and use the comparative/superlative.

Unit 3 – Talking about a film you would like to see; the conditional tense and subordinate clauses

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say what film they would like to see and why.
Most students will be able to research facts on a film of their choice and write about them, using a writing frame.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to a film review.

Key vocabulary: Ich würde gern/möchte den Film… sehen, weil ich das Buch gelesen habe = I would like to see the film…because I have read the book; meine Freundin hat mir den Film…empfohlen und deshalb werde ich morgen ins Kino gehen, um den Film zu sehen = my friend has recommended the film…to me und that is why I will go to the cinema tomorrow to watch the film; Ich möchte …sehen, weil mein Lieblingsschauspieler Leonardo.. die Hauptrolle spielt/weil er von meinem Lieblingsregisseur Polanski gemacht wurde = I would like to see the film… because my favourite actor… plays the leading part/it was made by my favourite director; Der beste Film, den ich je gesehen habe, war…. Das ist schon lange her, so dass ich ihn gern nochmal sehen würde = the best film I ever saw was… That is long ago, so that I would like to see it again

Unit 4 – Describing the plot of a film

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to give a 3-4 basic sentences explaining the outline of the plot.
Most students will be able to add a few more details.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to add some independently researched facts about the plot.

Key vocabulary: Das Haupthema ist… = the main theme …. Liebe/Gewalt, Mord/ Tod/Freiheit/Familie/Gut gegen Böse = love/violence/murder/death/freedom/family/good versus evil; es geht um einen Mann/eine Frau/eine Familie, die der…..= it is about a man/a woman/a family, who…..; es handelt vom 2.Weltkrieg/ einer Fanatsiewelt/ einer Zauberwelt/einem Liebespaar…..it is about the 2nd world war/ a fantasy world/ a magical world/ a couple in love

Unit 5 – Talking about a recent visit to the cinema

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write a short paragraph about a recent visit to the cinema.
Most students will be able to add a variety of opinions.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to say whether they would recommend the film or not.

Key vocabulary: vor einigen Wochen/neulich/vor kurzem = Some weeks ago/ recently/not long ago; ich bin ins Kino/einkaufen/essen gegangen = I went to the cinema/shopping/for a meal; ich habe meine Freunde getroffen/Karten reserviert/ eine riesige Tüte Popkorn/Gummibärchen gekauft = I met my friends/reserved tickets/bought a giant bag of popcorn/gummibears; die Werbung hat/ die Vorschauen haben 20 Minuten gedauert = the adverts/the trailers lasted 20 minutes; der Film war total ätzend/ enttäuschend/beeindruckend/umwerfend/geil/ein Volltreffer/ein Kunstwerk/ ein absolutes Muss/ ein Schlafmittel/ eine reine Zeit-und Geldverschwendung = the film was totally terrible/disappointing/impressive/stunning/great/a box office hit/a work of art/an absolut must /sent me to sleep a pure wasteof time; Ich werde/würde den Film jedem empfehlen. = I will/would recommend the film to everybody.

Unit 6 – Talking about a favourite actor

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to a short, basic paragraph about their favourite actor.

ost students will be able to use the passive in the past.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to adapt this to talk about someone they admire and say why.

Key vocabulary: Mein(e) Lieblingsschauspieler(in) heißt….. My favourite actor/actress is called;er,sie wurde durch die Rolle in dem Fim….. berühmt/bekannt;… he/she became famous with his/her part in…;hatte mit der Rolle in… seinen/ihren Durchbuch… had his/her breaktrhough. Er/sie ….ist im Jahr …in… geboren und wohnt jetzt in… he/she was born in the year….in… and now lives in……Mit 12 Jahren hat er seine/ihre erste Rolle bekommen… When he/she was 12, he/she got her 1st role. Bis jetzt hat er/sie in 12 Filmen/Stücken mitgespielt; up til now he/she has played in 12 films/plays. Er spielt seine/ihre Rolle immer so überzeugend/mitfühlend…. He/she always portrays his/her role convincingly/ sympathetically. Er/sie hat enorm viele Fans/Bewunderer…. Heshe has many fans/admirers.Er/sie sieht fantastisch/cool aus…. He/she looks fantastic/cool. Er/sie ist ein Vorbild für mich…. He/she is a role model for me. Er/sie wurde für den Oscar ‚bester Schauspieler‘ ausgezeichnet/vorgeschlagen…. hat einen Oscar bekommen… he/she won/ was nominated for/ received the Oscar

Unit 7 – Talking about preferences film viewing versus DVD

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say whether they prefer watching DVDs or go to the cinema and why.

ost students will be able to give advantages and disadvantages of both.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to what form they think film viewing will take in the future.

Key vocabulary: Ich finde ins Kino gehen= I find going to the cinema is…teuer/ein ganz anderes Erlebnis/ ein Abend mit Freunden = expensive/a totally different experience/ an evening out with friends; Ich möchte den Kinobesuch nicht missen = I wouldn’t like to miss a trip to the cinema; die Spezialeffekte/Tonqualität warden/sind immer besser = the special effects/sound quality is getting/is better and better; es ist etwas ganz anderes den Film auf der großen Leinwand zu sehen = it is completely different seeing a film on the big screen; man kann die neuesten Fime nu rim Kino sehen = you can only see the newest films in the cinema; sonst muss man eine Ewigkeit warten = otherwise you have to wait an eternity. Zu Hause ist es gemütlicher/billiger/nicht so stressig/entspannender/praktischer = at home it is cosier/cheaper/not so stressful/more relaxing/more practical; man kann den Film pausen, wann man will = one can pausethe film when you want.
