Unit 1 – Talking about what you are and are not allowed to do at home

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say what they are allowed to do at home using the modal verb ‘dürfen’.
Most students will be able to understand an extensive text on what young people are allowed to do and to write a basic text about themselves.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to write a more complicated text about what they are allowed/not allowed to do at home.

Key vocabulary: Was darfst du Zuhause machen? = What are you allowed to do at home? ; Ich darf keinen Job haben/keine Laute Musik hören/keine Haustiere haben/keine Pommes essen = I am not allowed to have a job/listen to loud music/have pets/eat chips ; Ich darf nicht bei Freunden übernachten/spät wegbleiben/allein in die Stadt fahren/am Vormittag fernsehen/rauchen = I am not allowed to stay the night with friends/stay out late/go into town on my own/watch TV in the morning/smoke

Unit 2 – Understanding common problems experienced by young people and what they do to deal with them. Using the ‘wenn’ clause.

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to understand and be able to name common problems.
Most students will be able to understand more extensive texts and what teenagers do when they have certain problems.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to say and write about their/friends problems and how they deal with them using the ‘wenn’ clause.

Key vocabulary: Ich habe ein Problem/Liebeskummer/Ärger mit dem Eltern/Probleme in der Schule/mit meinen Freunden/mit Drogen = I have a problem/a broken heart/trouble with my parents/problems in school/with my friends/with drugs

Vocabulary test and grammar test on ‘wenn’ clause.

How to help your child

Please use the vocabulary on this unit under the homework on the website to support your child’s work at home. Please test your child on the related vocab, orally and/or in writing. Encourage your child to use the sound files underneath the vocab files. They should listen and repeat several times. Please encourage your child to do learning on a little and often basis as this is the most effective strategy for learning vocab. Please encourage your child to use a dictionary or online dictionary such as www.wordreference.com to check the meaning of words in their homework book and NOTE this on the text. Encourage your child not to rush their written work but to check all language carefully, using model texts and a dictionary. It is best not to leave homework until the night before it is due in, in case there are difficulties or questions the teacher could answer.
