There are 6 units in this chapter.

Unit 1 – School subjects

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to understand 14 school subjects and a school timetable, ask and give some basic information about their timetable.
Most students will be able in addition to understand and give more detailed information, e.g. in what period of the day they have a certain subject.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to the word order rule “verb = 2nd idea and write a short paragraph on their favourite day.

Key vocabulary: Erdkunde = geography; Musik = music…; Ich habe Englisch, Deutsch…; Was hast du am Montag, Dienstag…;  Am Montag habe ich Mathe…; Was hast du in der dersten, zweiten, dritten… Stunde? In der ersten, zweiten… Stunde habe ich Geschichte….

Unit 2 – Thinking about school subjects

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to ask for and give 8 different opinions on various school subjects and what their favourite school subject is, using full sentences.
Most students will be able in addition to understand and give more adjectives of opinion and write a short paragraph about their school timetable and giving opinions by adapting a model.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to research and use some new expressions of opinions.

Key vocabulary: Wie findest du…? Ich finde..;  Mein Lieblingsfach ist…; interessant = interesting; toll = great; langweilig = boring; schwierig = difficult; antstrengend = tiring; gut = good

Unit 3 – Time

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to ask for and understand the numbers up to 60 and the time (24 hour clock).
Most students will be able in addition to say and give the numbers and the 24 hour clock.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to research and use the analogue time.

Key vocabulary: zweiunddreißig = 32; sechzig = 60; Wie viel Uhr ist es?/ Wie spät ist es? = What is the time? Es ist ein/ zwei Uhr = It is one/two  o’clock; es ist ein Uhr fünfzehn = it is one fifteen; es ist drei Uhr dreißig = it is three thirty; Es ist vier Uhr fünf und vierzig = it is four fortyfive; es ist sechs Uhr zwanzig = it is six twenty..

Unit 4 – TV programmes

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to ask for and say when certain TV programmes/lessons star).
Most students will be able in addition to understand authentic TV programmes and write a few sentences on starting times.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to write a short paragraph on some TV programmes and include an opinion.

Key vocabulary: Wann beginnt (Englisch….) am (Montag….)? = When does (English…) start on (Mondays….)?   Das Musikquiz….. beginnt um sechzehn Uhr = The music quiz starts at 16 hours.

Unit 5 – Ask/say what you eat and drink during break time

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to ask and give basic break time food and drink using full sentences.
Most students will be able in addition to use extended vocabulary on food and drink.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to combine the above with opinions.

Key vocabulary: Ich esse… = I eat; Ich trinke… = I drink; einen Orangensaft = an orange juice; ein Butterbrot = a sandwich; ein Stück Kuchen = a slice of cake; Kekse = biscuits; nichts = nothing

Unit 6 – Clothes

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to ask and say basic information on what they wear in full sentences.
Most students will be able in addition to use more extended vocabulary on this.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to will be able to incorporate colours into the above.

Key vocabulary: Was trägst du zur Schule = what do you wear to school; Ich trage… = I wear; einen Pullover/Rock = a jumper/skirt; eine Hose/Jacke = trousers/jacket; ein Hemd = a shirt; Schuhe = shoes

There are regular vocabulary tests.

How to help your child

Please use the vocabulary on this unit under the homework on the website to support your child’s work at home.  Please test your child on the related vocab, orally and/or in writing.  Encourage your child to use the sound files underneath the vocab files.  They should listen and repeat several times.  Please encourage your child to do learning on a little and often basis as this is the most effective strategy for learning vocab.  Please encourage your child to use a dictionary or online dictionary such as www.wordreference.com to check the meaning of words in their homework book and NOTE this on the text. Encourage your child not to rush their written work but to check all language carefully, using model texts and a dictionary.  It is best not to leave homework until the night before it is due in, in case there are difficulties or questions the teacher could answer.  Useful supporting material can be found on http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/ and on http://www.zut.org.uk/index.html which is a free online resource available after 4pm and before 9am and weekends.
