Unit 1 – Asking and saying which sports you and others (don’t) like
By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to ask for and say which sports (10 different ones) they like using “mag” und “finde” and to apply the rule: verb=2nd idea accurately.
Most students will be able in addition to expand their vocabulary on sports and adjectives.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to write a short paragraphs on likes/dislikes on certain sports including the third person.
Key vocabulary: Fußball, Schwimmen. Rollschuhlaufen, Radfahren, Angeln Leichtathletik… = football, swimming, rollerblading, cycling, fishing, athletics… ich/er/sie mag (sehr/nicht..) Unit 2 – Asking for and giving information about free time activities
By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able understand 12 different free time activities, to ask a friend about his/her hobbies and give an answer rand to know the conjugation of the above verbs in the 1st and 2nd person sing.
Most students will be able in addition to also ask and say what others do in their free time and know also the 3rd pers. sing. For the above verbs.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to expand their knowledge of vocabulary on hobbies and know the 1st and 3rd person plural of the above verbs.
Key vocabulary: Was machst du in deiner Freizeit?= What do you do in your free time? Ich spiele Klavier/am Computer/Fußball = I play the piano/ on the computer/ football; Ich gehe schwimmen/ins Kino = I go swimming, to the cinema; Ich fahre Rad = I ride my bike; Ich höre Musik = I listen to music; Ich besuche Freunde = I visit friends; Ich sehe fern = I watch TV; Ich faulenze = I am lazy; ich tanze = I dance; ich lese = I read.
Unit 3 – Saying what you do on each day of a typical week
By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say what other people do in their free time (10 different activities), using “gern + verb and mag + noun” and the 3rd person singular.
Most students will be able in addition to ask the question and to say 15 different activities.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to use also the 1st and rd person plural and to extend their written work by learning expression from reading texts (e.g “Ich bin großer Fußballfan” and adapting them for their own writing.
Key vocabulary: Was mag(st) du/ er/sie? = What do you, he,she like? Was machst(t) du/ er/sie gern in der Freizeit? = What do you,he,she like doing in your free time? Ich/ er/sie mag Fußball (nicht)= I,you,he,she likes football; Ich/er/sie spliele(t) (nicht) gern Fußball = I,he,she likes to play football;ich lese/er liest gern = I/he likes to read; ichsehe/er sieht gern fern= I/he likes to watch TV; ich fahre/er fährt gern Rad = I/he likes to ride the bike.
Unit 4 – Asking a friend and saying what your favourite things are
By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to ask someone about their favourite things (at least 10 different ones) and to answer the question for themselves using the correct gender /possessive adjective (my and your only).
Most students will be able in addition to say what other peoples favourite things are, using “sein(e) and ihr(e)” and give 5 more words/things.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to research a few more words and to use “our” as well.
Key vocabulary: Was ist dein/deine/ dein Lieblingstag/-farbe/-tier…? = What is your favourite day/colour/animal…? Mein(e)/Sein(e)/Ihr(e) Lieblingsfußballmannschaft/ -buch/ -kleidungsstück…ist… My/his/her favourite football team/book/ item of clothing is….
Unit 5 – Arranging a date with a friend to go out; conducting a short dialogue
By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to conduct a short conversation taking either role with prompts e.g.visuals.
Most students will be able in addition to research some more places in town to go to/activities to use and include them in their role-plays.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to conduct the role play without any prompts and ask/say where they meet.
Key vocabulary: Hast du am Montag/Dienstag… Zeit? = Are you free on Monday/Tuesday…? Ja/Nein. = Yes/no. Möchtest du ins Kino/ in die Disko/ ins Konzert/ schimmengehen? = Would you like to go to the cinema/disco/concert/swimming? … =Rad fahren/Tennis spielen…? = ….to ride your bike/ to play tennis? Wann treffen wir uns?= When will we meet? Um ein/zweiUhr dreißig… OK. Bis dann. = At one/two o’clock… ok. So long. Wo treffen wir us? Bei mir/dir. = Where will we meet? At mine/yours.

How to help your child
Please use the vocabulary on this unit under the homework on the website to support your child’s work at home. Please test your child on the related vocab, orally and/or in writing. Encourage your child to use the sound files underneath the vocab files. They should listen and repeat several times. Please encourage your child to do learning on a little and often basis as this is the most effective strategy for learning vocab. Please encourage your child to use a dictionary or online dictionary such as www.wordreference.com to check the meaning of words in their homework book and NOTE this on the text. Encourage your child not to rush their written work but to check all language carefully, using model texts and a dictionary. It is best not to leave homework until the night before it is due in, in case there are difficulties or questions the teacher could answer.
