Unit 1 – Talking about music with an emphasis on the past tense
By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to understand and answer basic questions in a music quiz and transfer their answers into the perfect tense.
Most students will be able to understand an extended text on answers to a music quiz and extend their own answers.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to conduct internet research on German music groups/programmes.
Key vocabulary: Musikvideo = Music video; Lieblingsgruppe/sänger(in) = favourite group/singer; Musiksendungen = Music programmes; Letzten monat/Samstag habe ich eine CD gekauft = Last month/Saturday I bought a CD; Letzte Woche bin ich zum Rockkonzert/in die Disco gegangen = Last week I went to the rock concert/to the disco
Unit 2 – Talking about books and reading habits; giving opinions using the ‘weil’ clause. Word order in subordinate clauses.
By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say what kind of books they read and give a reason for that using the ‘weil’ clause with verb at the end.
Most students will be able to conduct an interview about reading habits.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to include what they have read recently.
Key vocabulary: Welche Bücher liest du? = What books do you read?; Ich lese gern Sachbücher/Jugendbücher/Zeitschriften/Romane/Biographien/Zeitungen = I like to read non-fiction books/books for teenages/magazines/novels/biographies/newspapers; Warum? = Why?; Weil es gut geschrieben/spannend/interessant… ist = Because it is well written/tense/interesting…
Unit 3 – Ask and say what one uses computers for. Modal verbs.
By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to use the above sentences applying the correct word order.
Most students will be able to say what other people have done last week on the computer.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to include what they have done using the first person singular.
Key vocabulary: Man kann… = One can…; Im Internet surfen/Emails schreiben und lessen/auf Facebook quatschen/auf Ebay etwas ersteigern/Produkte kaufen/Musik hören/Filme gucken/Computerspiele spielen = Surf the internet/write and receive emails/chat on Facebook/bid on Ebay/buy products/listen to music/watch films

How to help your child
Please use the vocabulary on this unit under the homework on the website to support your child’s work at home. Please test your child on the related vocab, orally and/or in writing. Encourage your child to use the sound files underneath the vocab files. They should listen and repeat several times. Please encourage your child to do learning on a little and often basis as this is the most effective strategy for learning vocab. Please encourage your child to use a dictionary or online dictionary such as www.wordreference.com to check the meaning of words in their homework book and NOTE this on the text. Encourage your child not to rush their written work but to check all language carefully, using model texts and a dictionary. It is best not to leave homework until the night before it is due in, in case there are difficulties or questions the teacher could answer.
