Performance

Performing on an instrument or voice is worth 30% of the Edexcel GCSE course in total.

Requirements, marking and deadlines

Performance is sub-divided into 2 areas.  Students have to record 1 solo performance and 1 ensemble performance for submission:

Solo performance

  • This can be with a piano accompaniment or CD backing
  • This is worth 15%
  • This will be recorded at the end of Year 10
  • Students are marked on fluency & accuracy and also their interpretation of the piece
  • Pieces are slightly scaled according to difficulty
  • Students should discuss their choice of piece with their classroom teacher and also instrumental teacher.  It is important to have a piece that will show your capabilities but also which you can play securely
  • Regular practice at home is crucial here

Ensemble Performance

  • This is a piece where you must play with others.  However, it is important you are not sharing a line or a part.  The examiner must be clear what you are playing or singing
  • The size of the group can be anything from a duet, trio, quartet, to a small band or larger group such as a jazz band etc..
  • This is worth 15%
  • This will be recorded c. October or November of Year 11
  • Students are marked on fluency & accuracy and also their skill as an ensemble player
  • Pieces are slightly scaled according to difficulty
  • Students should discuss their choice of piece with their classroom teacher and also instrumental teacher.  It is important to have a piece that will show your capabilities but also which you can play securely
  • Regular Practice is crucial here
