Unit 1 – Talking about where to/when and with whom you go on holidays; revision of present tense

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say a few sentences where they usually go on holidays and where they went, when and with whom.
Most students will know all of the key vocabulary.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to research for more places/ who you could go with and time expressions.

Key vocabulary:  Voy/vamos…=I go/we go… Fui/fuimos…= I went/ we went… a Alemania, Argentina, Escocia, España, Francia, Grecia, México, Chile, a los Estados Unidos, al extranjero = to Germany, Argentina, Scotland, Spain, France, Grece, Mexico, Chile, the United States; abroad;  a la costa/ al mar/ a la montaña/ al campo/ a una ciudad que se llama.. = to the coast/ seaside/mountains/countryside/ to a town that is called…; el año pasado/ hace unos meses/dos años,/este verano/el invierno, la primavera  pasado/a = last year/ some months/ 2 years ago/ this summer/ last winter, spring; con mis padres/amigos/hermanos = with my parents, friends, siblings; con mi instituto/mi coro= with my school/choir; solo/a = on my own.

Unit 2 – Saying how you travelled, for how long you stayed and what the holiday was like

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say how they travelled, for how long they stayed and some positive and negative phrases of opinion.
Most students will be able to research more vocabulary to enhance their receptive skills on the topic.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to give advantages and disadvantages on certain transport.

Key vocabulary: Fui/Fuimos = I/ we went; fue = it was; en barco/avión/coche/ autocar/tren = by boat/ plane/ car/ coach/train; pasé = I spent; quince días/un fin de semana/ una semana/un mes = 15 days/a weekend/a week/ a month; lo pasé (muy/bastante/ un poco) bien/bomba/fenemonal/mal/fatal = I had a (very/quite/ a little) good/great/super/ bad/awful time; fue aburrido/regular/ un desastre/ superfantástico/divertido/ inolvidable/emocionante/terrible/impresionante = it was boring/normal/a catastrophe/ super fantastic/ fun/unforgettable/exciting/terrible/impressive; Me gustó bastante /nada= I quite liked it/ I didn’t like it at all.

Unit 3 – Saying what you and others did during the holidays; introduction of the preterite tense (simple past) regular and irregular verbs

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say some of the activities above using the pretertite tense correctly in the first person singular and plural and to write a short paragraph on a past holiday adapting the model text p. 7 Mira.
Most students will be able to use all persons singular in the preterite.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to know the conjugation in full and use different parts of the verb when writing their paragraph in the preterite tense.  

Key vocabulary:  Escuché música = I listened to music; fui de excursion/vacaciones = I went on a trip/holidays; conocí a mucha gente = I met a lot of people; descansé/nadé/bailé/patiné/esquié/comí/cené/jugué al …= I relaxed/swam/danced/did ice skating/skied/played….monté en bici/a caballo = I did cycling/horse riding; saqué fotos = I took photos; visité/vi lugares de interés, castillos/museos/monumentos = I visited/saw places of interest/castles/museums/monumentos; hice alpinismo/vela/caída libre = I did climbing/sailing/free fall ; (no) tuve miedo = I was(not) scared.

Unit 4 – Saying what the weather was like

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say what the weather was like.
Most students will be able to combine weather and activities.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to add opinions.

Key vocabulary: ¿Qué tiempo hizo? = What was the weather like?  Hizo buen/mal tiempo/calor/frio/sol/viento = It was good/bad weather/hot/cold/sunny/winy; hubo niebla/tormento = there was fog/storms; llovió/nevó = it rained/snowed. Cuando llovío me quedé en el hotel y leí u escuché música. Cuando hizo sol y calor fui con mis amigos a la playa, descansé y nadé en el mar. = When it rained, I stayed in the hotel and read or listened to music. When it was sunny and hot, I went with my friends to the beach and relaxed and swam in the sea.

Unit 5 – Description of different types of holiday accommodation and facilities; giving opinions; introduction of the imperfect tense

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say a few basic sentences about 2 different types of accommodation describing them and using the imperfect tense.
Most students will be able to combine weather and activities describe more types of accommodation, adding an opinion and saying what the best and the worst thing was.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to add opinions to describe a range of different accommodation adding more independently researched vocabulary and opinions.

Key vocabulary: Me quedé/ me alojé en…  = I stayed in..; un hotel (de cinco estrellas)/un albergue juvenil/un camping/una tienda/un parador/una pensión = a (5 star)hotel/a youth hostel/a campsite/a tent/ a parador/ a B&B; estaba al lado de la playa/en le centro de la ciudad = it was next to the beach/ in the town centre; (no) era (nada) = it was (not) (at all); acogedor/antiugo/nuevo/cómodo/bonito/feo/tranquilo/ruidoso/limpio/sucio/caro/

barato/animado =welcoming/old/new/comfortable/nice/ugly/quiet/ noisy/clean/ dirty/expensive/cheap/lively; tenía = it had; había = there was/were; no tenía.. ni..ni = it had neither..nor…; no había…tampoco había….= there were no…nor; (un)bar/restaurante/gimnasio = bar/restaurant/gym; (una) piscine climatizada/cocina comunitaria = heated pool/shared kitchen; lo mejor/peor era que… the best/ worst was that….

Unit 6 – Understanding and writing a paragraph on a past holiday using present perfect and imperfect tense

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write a paragraph describing a holiday, using 2 different past tense, which includes the information above by adapting a model text.
Most students will be able to enhance their text by adding more varied expressions like ‘primero.., luego.., mas tarde… lo peor/meor era… fue una experiencia…porque…
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to include also the present tense e.g. when expressing a liking for an activity.

Key vocabulary: En julio pasado = last July; pasé dos semanas en… I spent 2 weeks in…; Fui con mis padres = I went with my parents; fuimos en avión = we went b plane. El vuelo duró… the flight lasted… el viaje fue…= the journey was; nuestro hotel estaba en.. = our hotel was in… ; era muy….pero no había… sin embargo tenía…= it was very….but there weren’t… however, it did have… los clients eran ingleses = the clients were English. Los camereros hablaban inglés y eran my corteses = the waiters spoke English and they were very polite. Hizo sol todos los días = it was sunny every day; puede hacer muchas actividades = I could do lots of activities. Para mí es un lugar ideal = For me, it is an ideal place; espero volver…porque… I hope to return…because….

Unit 7 – Complaining about a holiday

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write a few sentences complaining about an aspect of the holiday.
Most students will be able to give opinions.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to say what they intend to do in their next holiday.

Key vocabulary: Quiero querjarme ahora = I would like to complain now; quiero un descuento = I would like a dicount; quiero cambiar de habitación = I’d like to change rooms; había muchas problemas = there were lots of problems; el avión se retrasó 3 horas = the plane was 3 hours late; había mucho ruido en el avión/de los bares de enfrente del hotel/del tráfico = there was a lot of noise in the plane/coming from the pubs opposite the hotel/from the traffic; tuvimos que hacer colas duante 2 horas por el ferry = we had to queue for 2 hours for the ferry cuando llegamos; el barco era lleno = the boat was full when we arrived. El hotel se encontraba a dos kilómetros de la playa = the hotel was 2 km away from the beach; el aseo/ascensor/la luz/la ducha no funciona = the toilet/lift/light/shower didn’t work. La cama/el baño está sucio = the bed/the bath was dirty; no había jabon/toallas/ piscina/ sauna/discos = there was no soap/towels/a pool/sauna/discos; había cucarachas = there were cockroaches;la comida estaba repugnante = the food was disgusting; los camereros eran perzosos y descorteses; the waiters were lazy and rude.

Unit 8 – Saying what type of holidays you normally do and what type you would prefer; introduction of conditional tense

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write some basic sentences about what they usually do in their holiday and what type of holiday they like best.

ost students will be able to use 2-3 sentences in the conditional tense.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to research vocabulary to write a few sentences about a winter holiday or a more exotic holiday. 

Key vocabulary: Por las vacaciones de verano/de semana Santa/de invierno = For the summer/easter/winter holiday; generalmente vamos a..= we usually go to….; solemos ir en coche lo que (no) me gusta porque… we usaully go by car which I do(not) like because.. prefiero ir en… I prefer to go by; nos alojemos en una pension cerca de la playa = We stay in a B&B near the beach; es importante ir de vacaciones para descansar = it is important to go on holidays to relax. Cuando voy de vacaciones me gusta mucho hacer los deportes acuáticos pero vamos tambíen de vacaciones para descubrir el mundo. = When I go on holidays I like a lot to do water sports but we also go on holidays to discover the world. Mis vacaciones preferidas serían en las que puedes hacer mucho deporte al aire libre. = My favourite holidays would be those where you do lots of sports outdoors.  

Unit 9 – Talking about holiday plans; introduction to the future tense; revision of the near future tense and conditional

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write some basic sentences about future holiday plans using either the near future or the future tense.
Most students will be able to use both future tenses.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to also use the conditional tense.

Key vocabulary: El año/el invierno/verano/la semana que viene = next year/winter / summer/week; iré a Austria para Navidad a esquiar. = I will go to Austria for Christmas. Vamos a alojarnos en una cabaña de troncos muy cómodo de seis habitaciones = we are going to stay in a very comfortable wooden chalet which has six romos. Alquilaremos esquíes y snowboards porque es mucho más barato que comprar unos nuevos. = We will hire skies and snowboards because this is much cheaper than buying new ones. ¡Seremos doce personas en total! Vendrán mis tíos, mis tías y mis primos también. ¡Estoy seguro que nos divertiremos! = We will be 12 people all together. My uncles and aunts and my cousins will come as well. I am sure that we will have a good time. Me gustaría ir a Italia con mi familia. = I would like to go with my family to Italy. Alojaríamus en un hotel caro = We would stay in an expensive hotel. Nadaría mucho y comería una gran cantidad de comida italiana = I would swim and eat a lot of italian food.

Unit 10 – Talking about what your journey was like

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write some basic sentences about what the journey was like.
Most students will be able to write negative and positive aspects and using connectives.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to include opinions.

Key vocabulary: El viaje fue…= The journey was… largo/horrible/aburrido/cansado/un desastre/agradable/divertido/corto/ cómodo = long/horribl/boring/tiring/a desaster/ pleasant/entertaining/short/comfortable; Me disfruté del paisaje = I enjoyed the countryside; Vi dos películas interesantes = I watched 2 interesting films; Leí un libro emocionante = I read an exciting book; siempre me marearse cuando viajamos in coche = I always get travel sick when we travel by car. El movimiente constante del barco me da nausea = the constant movement of the boat makes me nauseous; me mareaba durante el viaje pero quando llagamos me sentí mejor. = I was sick on the journey but when we arrived I felt better. Estabamos en un tápon de tráfico por muchas horas = We were stuck in a traffic jam for many hours. Mes padres estaban furiosos = My parents were furious. Estaba enfadado = I was angry; mis hermanos se disputaban = my siblings/brothers quarelled.
