Unit 1 – Description of the school and facilities

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say at least 6 sentences describing their school.
M
ost students will be able to use a range of adjectives with correct endings and ‘donde’ in a relative clause.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to include independently researched vocabulary and structures and add an imperfect tense/the passive.

Key vocabulary: Mi instituto se llama… = my school is called;  es un colegio mixto secundária = it is a mixed comprehensive school; es (bastante/muy/especialmente) grande/pequeño/moderno/antiguo = it is (quite/very/particularly) big/small/modern/old); tenemos approxidadamente…alumnos y….profesores. = we have approx. ….pupils and … teachers. Fue construido en los años… It was built in the … Hay… There is/are; buena instalaciones = good facilities; un gran patio = a big school yard, un campo de fútbol/una cancha de baloncesto = a football pitch/a basketballcourt ; laboratorios bien equipados = well equipped labs;  un gimnasio nuevo/muchas aulas modernas con pizarras interactivas = a new gym/many modern classrooms with interactive whiteboards, pienso que mi insti/los profesores son + adjectives = I think my school/the teachers…;  antes el edificio era más pequeño y no teníamos las aulas de infromática que tenemos hoy = The building used to be much smaller and we didn’t have the computer rooms that we have now.

Unit 2 – Saying what subject you do and giving your opinion; making comparisons

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say what subjects they do and give an opinion (positive and negative) and use the ‘porquel’ clause.
Most students will be able to make comparisons.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to use the subordinating conjunction ‘sin embargo’

Key vocabulary: Hago/estudio/tengo…= I do/learn/have…. asignaturas que son obligataras/ asignaturas que podemos eligir…= core subjects/ option choices; la geografía – las matmáticas, = geography – maths; en mi opinión/pienso que/me parece que = in my opinion/I think that; difícil/facíl/complicado/útil/importante/más interesante que… = difficult/easy/complicated/useful/important; more interesting than.. Mi asignatura preferida…..= my favourite subject…. me gusta… like it…; se me da(n) bien… I get on well in……no soporto/ me cae fatal = I can’t stand it.

Unit 3 – Talking about teachers

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to at least two teachers, one positive one negative using adjectives and qualifiers.
Most students will be able to use the superlative and justify it.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to include different tenses

Key vocabulary: demasiado/un poco/no…nada/muy = too/a little/not at all/very; trabajador/inteligente/listo/severo/tolerante/divertido/optimista/aburrido/ (im)patiente/(in)justo….= hardworking/intelligent/tolerant/funny/optimistic/boring/ (im)patient/ unfair;  el/la mejor/peor profesor del colegio = the best/worst teacher of the school….; …es tan bueno como…  = is as good as…; me cae fatal = I can’t stand him/her; se enfada rapidamente = he,she gets angry quickly; mi professor de matemáticas es demasiado exigente =  my math teacher is too demanding… me quedé sin recreo… I had to do a detention; no puedo nunca entender sus explicaciones = I can never understand his/her explanations;

Unit 4 – Describing a typical school day

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to give a basic account of a normal school day.
Most students will be able to include opinions.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to mention some daily routine activities before school and how they get to school.

Key vocabulary:  Las clases empiezan = school starts at; tenemos seis clases por día= we have six lessons a day. Cada clase dura… each lesson lasts…. después las dos primera clases tenemos el recreo; = After the first two lesssons we have break; el  recreo dura media hora = break lasts half an hour; durante el recreo = In break time… me encuentro con mis amigos/ voy al aire libre/hago mis deberes/como un bocadillo/meriendo= I meet my friends/ I go outside/ I do my homework/I eat my sándwich/I have lunch; a la hora de comer = At lunchtime; como en el comedor/ voy a casa/ voy al club de teatro… = I eat in the canteen/ go home/ go to drama club; por la tarde hay dos clases = in the afternoon there are two lessons; las clases terminan a las tres = school finishes at three o’clock.  

Unit 5 – Describing a school day in the past

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to give a basic account of a school day in the past.
Most students will be able to include opinions.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to describe a school trip.

Key vocabulary:  El lunes/viernes..pasado = Last Monday/Friday; empezamos con dos clases de historia lo que me gustó bastante porque … = we started with 2 history lessons which I liked because….;en el recreo fui a la biblioteca en seguida porque tuve que terminar mis deberes por la clase siguiente = in break I went straight to the library because I had to finish my homework for the next lesson;  no pude encontrarme con mis amigos  = I couldn’t meet my friends. Hube una clase de informatica, aburridísima! Y entonces tuvimos inglés.= There was an IT lesson, super boring! And after that we had English. En la hora de comer fui con mis amigos al comedor porque hice mal tiempo y llovió.= At lunch I went with my friends to the canteen because it was bad weather and it rained. Por la tarde hube dos clases de dibujo y fue relajante. = In the afternoon there was art and it was relaxing. A las tres, cuando el día terminó, mis amigos y yo fuimos al centro comercial. Tomamos un café y fuimos de compras. Entonces volví a casa e hice mis deberes. = At 3o’clock, when school finished, I went with my friends to the shopping centre. We had a coffee and went shopping. Then I went home and did my homework.

Unit 6 – Describing and discussing pros and cons on school uniform

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to describe their school uniform and give an opinion.
Most students will be able to say what is not allowed to wear and give one advantage/disadvantage.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able give a wider range of opinions and pros and cons.

Key vocabulary: En mi colegio tenemos que llevar uniforme = In my school we have to wear a uniform; lo odio = I hate it; los chicos llevan unos pantalones negros, una camisa blanca, un jersey azul y zapatos negros. Las chicas deben llevar una falda azul. No se permite llevar joyas y maquillaje. = the boys wear black trousers, a white shirt, a blue sweater and black shoes. The girls must wear a blue skirt. It is not allowed to wear jewlery and make-up.  El uniforme es superfeo/cómodo…. The uniform is super ugly/comfortable…. a mí, no me importa porque es práctico = It doesn’t matter to me because it’s practical; prefería llevar mis propia ropa = I would prefer to wear my own clothes. Se puede indentificarse con el instituto = You can identify yourself with the school. Es caro/barato = it is expensive/cheap; (no) puede eliminar la diferencia entre los alumnos ricos y pobres.  = it can (not) eliminate the difference between rich and poor pupils.

Unit 7 – Describing and giving opinions on school rules

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to give 2-3 rules and a basic opinion.
 Most students will be able to give 4-5 rules and more extended opinions on these.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able give a wider range of rules and opinions that they have researched independently.

Key vocabulary: No se puede hablar en clase.=  You cannot talk in lessons.  Es obligatorio comer en la cantina. = It is compulsory to eat in the canteen. Se debe llegar a tiempo = you must be on time. No se permite portarse mal. = It is not permitted to misbehave. Está prohibido llevar maquillaje/joyas y piercings. = It is forbidden to wear make-up/ jewelry and piercings.  Los alumnos no deben ser ni desobediente ni groseros. = Pupils mustn’t be either disobedient or vulgar. No se permite usar el móvil o mandar mensajes en clase. = It is not allowed to use mobile phones or send messages in class. No nos dejan fumar en el colegio. = They don’t let us smoke in school. Si nos portamos mal, tenemos que trabajar durante el recreo. = When we misbehave we have to work through break. No entiendo esta regla/(no) estoy de acuerdo con eso/creo que es una regla razonable, estúpida = I don’t understand this rule/I(don’t) agree with this/ I think that this is a sensible, stupid rule. …porque/ya que… = because….

Unit 8 – Describing your ideal school

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to give some basic sentences in the conditional tense.
Most students will be able to give more extended description about their ideal school.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able describe their ideal school using a wide range of vocabulary.

Key vocabulary: En mi colegio ideal(no) habría / (no) tendríamos = In my ideal school there would be/we would have; una pscina olímpica/una pista de esquí/robots en vez de profes/viajes de estudios por todo el mundo = an olympic pool/a ski slope/ robots instead of teachers/ study trips in the whole world; (no) podrías/deberías/ sería obligatorio llevar uniforme/escuchar podcasts = you would (not) be able/would (not) have to/it would (not) be compulsary  to wear uniform/listen to pod casts; las clases empazarían a las… y terminarían a las….= the lessons would start at… and finish at…; estudiaríamos… we would study…..  no habría(n) violencia entre los alumnos/acoso escolar/fracaso escolar/estrés/exámenes  = there wouldn’t be any violence between pupils/any bullying/failure at school/stress/exams.

Unit 9 – Saying what you would change about your school if you could

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to 3-5 sentences what they would change.
Most students will be able to say more things they would change and to give opinions.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to give also justifications

Key vocabulary: A mí me gustaría tener… = I would like to have…; Para mí sería bien, si tuviéramos = For me it would be good if we had…; Me molesta tener que… = It annoys me that we have to….; Sería mejor si podríamos…. = It would be better if we could… En mi opinión deberían permitirnos…. = In my opinion they should allow us to…. Yo derogaría…. = I would abolish….. Pienso que… = I think that….; sería fenomenal si tuviéramos ….= it would be good if we had…..; aunque tenemos algunas instalaciones nuevas me gustaría tener….. although we have some good facilities I would like to have…..

Unit 10 – Talking about what you will do after GSCE

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say a few sentences about their future plans using near future and futures tense.
Most students will be able to use a wider range of vocabulary and also the conditional tense.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to what kind of job they would like to do and why.

Key vocabulary: Cuando termine el colegio/cuando slaga del colegio = When I will have finished with school; cuando tenga treinta años= When I will be 30 years old; cuando termine en la universidad/mi formación profesional = When I will have finished university/ my training/apprenticeship; voy a seguir estudiando = I will continue to study; voy a hacer mis A-levels = I will do my A-levels; no estudiaré más = I will not study anymore; tomaré un año de descanso = I will take a gap year. Entonces me gustaría estudiar en la universidad = Then I would like to study at uni; me apetecería ser medico/abogado/cantante = I would like to become a doctor/lawyer/singer; porque es/se puede… because it is/one can…; trabajaré en el extranjero – I will work abroad; me casaré y tendré hijos = I will marry and have children; no ya sé que voy a hacer; = I don’t know yet what I am going to do; pefiero trabajar en una oficina = I would prefer to work in an office.
