Unit 1 – Talking about and comparing film genres

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to categorize some titles and some genres, say a sentence about the genres of certain films and express like/dislikes.
Most students will  know all genres.

Key vocabulary: las películas de amor, románticas/… de aventuras/las comedías/ las películas de historia/.. .de terror/… de acción/..ciencia-ficción/las policías/los dibujos animados/ ..del Oeste/los documentales = romances; love story/ adventure films/ comedie/ historical films/ horror films/action films/ science fiction/ crime thrillers/ cartoons/westerns/documentaries;

Es principalmente…/en parte…, y en parte…. /’title’ es una película de….con elementos de…./ no solo es…sino que también es =  is mainly / partly – partly/‘title’ is a (genre) with elements of a (genre)/it is not only…but also…. me gusta/me gustó la película/ me encanta/me encanto…; = I like/I liked the film/ I love/I loved the film; en mi opinón/a mi modo de ver/me parece que…me interesan/fascinan/ me dan miedo/odio/prefiero/no soporto las películas de … = in my opinión/in my view/it seems to me that../….interest me/fascinate me/scar me/I hate/I prefer/I can’t stand ….films

Unit 2 – Giving opinions on film genres/films and justification using ‘porque/ya que’ and ‘sin embargo/ aunque’ in subordination

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to describe different genres of films, using at least 3 different adjective with correct endings for each in full sentences e.g. Opino que las comedías romantícas son divertidas, entretenidas pero a veces aburridas.
Most students will be able to use at least 5 different adjectives and the porque/sin embargo sentences.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to research even more interesting vocabulary and use the comparative/superlative.

Key vocabulary: El guion / el tema / la historia es/la película …. = the plot /storyline is… deprimente / misterioso / hermoso / emocionante / extraña / mágica / terrorífica / sorprendente / imresionante / triste / feliz,alegre / entretenido / aburridísmo / bellísimo / divetíssimo / anticuadíssimo / = depressing / mysterious / beautiful / exciting / strange / magical /terrifying / surprising / unpredictable / impressive / sad / happy / entertaining /  so boring /really beautiful / really fun / so old-fashioned

Unit 3 – Talking about a film you would like to see; the conditional tense and subordinate clauses

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say what film they would like to see and why.
Most students will be able to research facts on a film of their choice and write about them, using a writing frame.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to write a film review.

Key vocabulary: Mi película preferida es….y por eso me gustaría verla otra vez. = My favourite film is…. And that is why I would like to see it again. Acabo de leer el libro “…” y me gusto mucho. Me encantaría ver la película. = I have just read the book “….” and I liked it a lot. I would love to see the film. Mis amigos me recomendaron la película y entonces quisiera verla. = My friends have recommended the film and so I would like to see it. Soy un/a fan de las películas de…. y por eso me gustaría ver “….”.   I am a fan of …..films and therefore I would like to see….; Quiero ver “….” porque me fascinan/interesan las películas de…. = I want to see”….” because I am fascinated by/interested in……films. Me encantaría ver “….” porque fue creada por el director ”……” que es bueníssimo y muy famoso. = I would love to see”…” because it was made by the director “….” who is really good and very famous.

Unit 4 – Describing the plot of a film

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to give a 3-4 basic sentences explaining the outline of the plot.
Most students will be able to add a few more details.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to add some independently researched facts about the plot.

Key vocabulary: El tema principal es el amor/el poder/ la muerte/el asesinato/la corrupción…. = The main theme/story is love/power/death/murder/corruption…..; se trata de un hombre/una mujer/una familia que… It is about a man/a woman/a family who….; Cuenta la hisotria de la segunda guerra mundial/de una mujer/de un grupo de amigos = it tells the story of the 2nd world war/ of a woman/of a group of friends. El tema/la historia es complicado/a/triste/superficial/emocionante. = The plot is complicated/sad/superficial/exciting. El final es a la vez triste y felz/muy sorprendente/increíble/inolvidable/impresionante = The end is sad and happy at the same time/surprising/incredible/unforgettable/impressive.

Unit 5 – Talking about a recent visit to the cinema  

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write a short paragraph about a recent visit to the cinema.

ost students will be able in addition to add a variety of opinions.
Some learners will have progressed further and will be able to say whether they would recommend the film or not.

Key vocabulary:  El fin de semana pasado/ recientemente/ayer por la noche = last weekend, recently,yesterday evening; Nos gusta ir al cine porque es divertido ver una película juntos. We like to go to the cinema because it is fun to watch a film together. Me compré palomitas y una coca cola porque…= I bought popcorn and a coke because.. Desafortunadamente la película no era buena. =  Unfortunately the film was not good. Era aburridíssmo!! Una pastilla para dormir!  = It was so boring. It sent me to sleep! Era demasiado largo, todo era previsible y era una pérdida de tiempo y dinero. = It was too long, all was predictable and it was a waste of time and money. Qué decepción! = What a disappointment. Era un éxito/sensacional/ un obre maestro/es una película que hay que ver = it was a success/sensational/a work of art/ a must see. Los efectos especiales/la música era(n) fenomenal = the special effects/the music was stunning. Recomendaré/S la película a todos = I will/would recommend the film to everybody.

Unit 6 – Talking about a favourite actor

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to write a short, basic paragraph about their favourite actor.

ost students will be able to give the passive in the past.

ome learners will have progressed further and will be able to adapt this to talk about someone they admire and say why.

Key vocabulary: mi actor/actriz preferido/a se llama…= My favourite actor/actress is called; con su papel en la película “…” fue famoso/a =  he/she became famous with his/her part in…; nació en el año 1980 en Valencia y ahora vive en NY. = He/she was born in the year….in… and now lives in NY. A las once años recibió su primer… = papel = When he/she was 12, he/she got her 1st role. Hasta ahora ha jugado en 12 películas; = up til now he/she has played in 12 films. Siempre hace su papel de una forma tan convincente= He/she always portrays his/her role convincingly. Admiro a/Adoro a porque sus películas son siempre si….= I admire/like him/her very much because his/her films are always so…..; me encantan todas su películas porque creo que muestra mucho talento interpretando sus personajes = I love all his/her films because I thinkhe is so gifted in portraying his/her roles; es conocido por sus interpretaciones excelentes = he is known for his excellent performances. Es muy guapo/a = He/she is very good looking. Ha ganado un “Oscar”por major actor/actriz en la pelicula… en el ano….= He/she has won an Oscar  as best actor in the film “…” in the year…

Unit 6 – Talking about preferences film viewing versus DVD

By the end of this unit it is expected that all students will be able to say whether they prefer watching DVDs or go to the cinema and why.

ost students will be able to give advantages and disadvantages of both.

ome learners will have progressed further and will be able to say what form they think film viewing will take in the future.

Key vocabulary: Pienso que ir al cine es caro/una experiencia totalmente distinta/ una noche juntos con amigos= I think going to the cinema is expensive/a totally different experience/ an evening out with friends. Prefiero ir al cine en lugar que ver DVDs en casa porque ver una película en la pantalla grande es mejor. = I prefer going to the cinema instead of watching a DVD at home because to see the film on the big screen is better.  La calidad es mucho mejor y sobre todo los efectos especiales, la banda sonora y las imágenes son más impresionantes. The quality is much better, especially the special effects the sound tracks and the scenes are more impressive. La cantidad de los anuncios me molesta. = The amount of adverts annoys me. Ver DvDs en casa es más cómodo/barato/relajando/práctico = To watch DVDs at home is cosier/cheaper/more more relaxing/more practical;  se puede ver películas por internet cuando uno tiene tiempo = one can watch films on the internet because you can watch when you got time.
